Media

We act as a central contact point for journalists enquiring about University-based stories — perhaps wanting to follow-up a research story or asking for expert comment on a particular topic. We are handling an increasing number of calls — now more than 1,000 a year — and we aim in each case to put the reporter in touch with the most appropriate member of staff. We also produce a Guide to Expertise for the Media to help journalists find contacts quickly.

We act as an advice point for staff or students who have a story to tell and want to know how to get the message across to the media. A key part of our role is to encourage members of the University to think positively in terms of contacting the media and to foster good relations with a broad cross-section of press and broadcast journalists.

We issue carefully-targeted press releases and provide a monitoring and cuttings service to track the resulting coverage. A brief summary of the coverage obtained can be found in Press-Up, a fortnightly publication posted on the Web.

We also produce the daily production of Hermes, the University's daily on-screen news and information service, which is available on the web and on screens across the University's campuses.
