University celebrates second Nobel Prize link in three days

PA123/03 — October 09 2003

The University of Nottingham is celebrating a link with a second Nobel Prize winner in the space of three days.

Professor Clive Granger, who was today announced as the winner of the Nobel Prize for Economics 2003, spent more than 22 years at The University of Nottingham as an undergraduate, lecturer, reader and ultimately as a professor.

His success followed the announcement on Monday this week that the Nobel Prize for Medicine 2003 had been awarded to Professor Sir Peter Mansfield, the pioneer of magnetic resonance imaging as a medical diagnostic tool. Sir Peter has spent his entire academic career at The University of Nottingham.

The Vice-Chancellor of The University of Nottingham, Sir Colin Campbell, said: "The University was already celebrating the tremendous news of a first-ever Nobel Prize winner in the form of Sir Peter Mansfield. Now we have the news that a graduate and former professor of the University has won the Nobel Prize for Economics. It is a huge boost for our morale and we offer our most sincere congratulations to Professor Granger."

Professor Granger was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Science by The University of Nottingham in 1992. On that occasion the Public Orator, Professor David Greenaway, told the audience that 'many people see Clive Granger as a potential Nobel Laureate'.

Professor Clive Granger was educated at West Bridgford Grammar School in Nottingham. He graduated from The University of Nottingham in 1955 with first class honours in Mathematics and Economics. He joined the staff of the University in 1956, as an assistant lecturer in statistics in the Department of Mathematics and later transferred to Economics. He was promoted to a Readership in Econometrics in 1965, but was later tempted back to Mathematics, taking up the position of Professor of Applied Statistics at the age of only 31.

He left Nottingham for a chair at the University of California in 1974. He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Science by The University of Nottingham in 1992, when the Public Orator, Professor David Greenaway, tipped him as a future Nobel Laureate.

Professor Greenaway said today: "It is a source of great pride to us that Clive Granger is a product of this University."
