Minimum English Language Entry Requirements

This policy specifies minimum English Language entry requirements for students applying to the University of Nottingham. These are minimum entry requirements and many subjects require higher entry qualifications. These requirements apply to students undertaking award and non-award bearing studies at the University .

International students whose first language is not English are required to have an appropriate grade/score in an approved examination in English language before they can register on an academic programme. Home Students
Home Students are required to have an appropriate grade/score in an approved examination in English language before they can register on an academic programme. This is normally Grade C in GCSE English Language or equivalent.

International Students
International students whose first language is not English are required to have an appropriate grade/score in an approved examination in English language before they can register on an academic programme. Exceptions are sometimes made for students who have had their education entirely in the medium of English and where English is a well-established second language.

The following are the recognised English Language qualifications:

  • The Academic version of the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS): This is available world-wide through British Council Centres.
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). This is a paper version with a writing test (TWE).

Below are the grades/scores normally required for immediate entry on to academic programmes at the University. Grades/scores are valid for a maximum period of two years prior to the date of registration.

Foundation Courses
IELTS 5.5 (no less than 5.0 in any element)
TOEFL paper-based 527 (no less than 3.5 in TWE)
TOEFL iBT 71 (no less than 17 in any element)

Warwick English Language Test DCC

Warwick HE Foundation Programme 45%

Medicine
IELTS 7.5 (no less than 7.0 in any element)
TOEFL paper-based 630 (no less than 5.0 in TWE)
TOEFL iBT 109 (no less than 22 in any element)

MBA Programmes
IELTS 7.0 (no less than 6.0 in any element)
TOEFL paper-based 600 (no less than 5.0 in TWE) together with GMAT of 600 with an AWA of 5.0

Other Undergraduate/Postgraduate Programmes (please check with School for individual requirements)

IELTS 6.0 (no less than 5.0 in any element)
TOEFL paper-based 550 (no less than 4.0 in TWE)
TOEFL iBT 79 (no less than 17 in any element)

OR

IELTS 6.5 (no less than 6.0 in any element)
TOEFL paper-based 573 (no less than 4.5 in TWE)
TOEFL iBT 88 (no less than 19 in any element)

OR

IELTS 7.0 (no less than 6.0 in any element)
TOEFL paper-based 600 (no less than 4.5 in TWE)
TOEFL iBT 100 (no less than 19 in any element)

 

There may also be scores in other English language qualifications that are acceptable as equivalent to the above IELTS/TOEFL scores. Details of these are held by the Admissions Office and are subject to approval by the Recruitment and Admissions Committee.

Language Scores Acceptable as Equivalents to Ielts

The following scores (see link below) may be acceptable, though a CELE Banding or IELTS are strongly preferred as the most reliable predictors of ability to cope at a British University. IELTS specifically tests academic language skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Please note that CELE banding is adjusted to and judged on the IELTS score required and particular skills needed for a specific school. Therefore there is no equivalent given below.
