Experience Programme Overview
What is the Experience Programme?
The Experience Programme is a free year-long Programme offering Year 12 students from the region the opportunity to explore the university experience in depth. It develops the skills that will lead to success at A-level and beyond and also provides on-going guidance and support to assist in important decision-making about the future.
What's included in the programme?
The programme consists of our week long Summer School, e-mentoring support, revision and skills sessions and a graduation. You also have the opportunity to earn £1000 per year of study if you enrol at Nottingham.
What happens during the week?
The Summer School is the first major event of the Experience Programme and provides participants with the opportunity to meet each other, as well as Programme staff and Ambassadors, whilst experiencing university life. The dates for Summer School 2012 are Sunday 8 - Friday 13 July.
At the Summer School, you will:
-
live on campus, in a University hall of residence
-
gain an insight into your chosen academic subject area through a variety of teaching styles
-
develop new skills
-
participate in a wide range of social activities
-
meet current staff and students at the University of Nottingham
The structure and programme are designed to give you a taste of higher education and assist you in making decisions about your future. The activities will help you learn about yourself and what you'd like to study, and the information sessions will provide guidance on the practical details of applying to university and being a successful university student.
What subjects are available?
Applicants to the Experience Programme should choose one academic strand to follow for the Summer School week. This should include the subjects most similar to what you might like to study at university.
For 2012, the Summer School subject streams on offer will be:
-
English, American and Film Studies
-
Medicine and Health Sciences
-
Physical Sciences (including chemistry, physics and astronomy)
-
Social Sciences (including geography, law, politics and sociology)
-
Veterinary Medicine and Biosciences
Where does the Summer School take place?
The Summer School is a residential event on the University of Nottingham, University Park Campus. Participants will live in a hall of residence for the week and attend lessons and activities in university teaching, sport and social facilities.
All Programme participants will be accommodated in the same hall of residence, though male and female students will live in separate areas. Each participant will be allocated their own room, including all furnishings and bedding. Bathroom and pantry facilities are shared, but are plentiful, with only a small number of people sharing a particular area.
The hall of residence has shared dining and social spaces, including television and game rooms and outdoor areas suitable for sports. Breakfast and dinner is served in the hall each day of the summer school, and lunches will be provided at one of the student canteens on campus. Plenty of options are available at each meal, and all dietary requirements can be catered for.
e-Mentoring
During the course of the Summer School you will be paired with a University student Mentor, who will continue to provide advice and guidance to you, via e-mail, throughout Year 13.
Revision classes
Also in Year 13, you will attend your choice of revision classes covering a variety of topics from exam techniques and study skills to specific subject support. In addition to helping you prepare for exams, these sessions will give you the opportunity to catch up with people from the Summer School.
Scholarship
Programme 'graduates' who enrol at the University of Nottingham as undergraduates will automatically qualify to receive the Nottingham Potential Bursary worth £1000 per year for each year of study.
The whole programme is offered completely free of charge.
