The Code of Practice for Meetings or Other Activities
on University Premises was approved by the University Council in
May 1987. It was prepared in relation to the duties of the University
in respect of freedom of speech as laid down in Section 43 of the
Education (No.2) Act 1986. The Code seeks to take steps which are
reasonably practicable to ensure that freedom of speech within the
law is secured for members, students and employees of the University
and for visiting speakers.
All events should follow the Code, whether on the
premises of or in the grounds of the University.
If there are any concerns about an event in terms
of freedom of speech (or if a speaker is known to be particularly
controversial for example) in relation to a particular event, these
should be raised with the Registrar when booking a room through
Timetabling/Room
Bookings or booking an outdoor event through the Estate
Office. Room bookings may only be made through the Timetabling
Office website by members of staff of the University. All student
bookings must be made through the Student Union office in Portland
Building. See the Timetabling Office Room Booking Protocol for details.
