Faster, cleaner, safer, more efficient: transport systems are under more pressure to deliver than ever before.

Our research

Our world-class research sits within five key themes:

  • Propulsion and power systems
  • The electrification of transport
  • Lightweighting and advanced manufacturing
  • Intelligent vehicles and transport infrastructure
  • Seamless mobility and optimisation of transport of goods and people

We will apply this expertise to the aerospace, automative and rail sectors: each face shared challenges, and our multidisciplinary approach will discover synergies and deliver exciting, innovative solutions.

Our impact

The UK has the world’s second largest aerospace sector and Nottingham and the East Midlands form one of its key hubs. Global demand is accelerating – by 2030 there will be around 27,000 new aircraft in the skies, worth around $3.7tn. We are well-placed to play a leading role in this expansion. Our ground-breaking research, for example towards lighter, more efficient aircraft as members of the Clean Sky initiative, can be applied to projects in other sectors such as Europe’s Shift2Rail.

The University’s research portfolio in aerospace and transport technology is tens of millions of pounds.  We have significant involvement with the sizable supply chain for transport sectors in the East Midlands, and our industrial partners include Airbus Group, BAE Systems, Boeing, GE Aviation, NATS (National Air Traffic Control Services), Rolls-Royce, Aston Martin, Bentley, Ford, Honda, Jaguar Land Rover,Nissan, Caterpillar, Cummins, AECOM, Network Rail, Siemens and Thales.

Our research strengths and the range and depth of such partnerships will give The University of Nottingham an international profile for innovative solutions as the world seeks cleaner, more efficient and better-integrated aerospace and transport solutions.
