Expertise Summary

Paolo Beccarelli, M.Sc. in Architectural Engineering, PhD, is Assistant Professor in Architectural Structures and member of the Architecture, Culture and Tectonics Reserach Group and coordinator of the Tectonics research area at The University of Nottingham. He is Chartered Engineer and Architect (Italy) and Vice-Chair of the European Network TensiNet.

His research is mainly focused on the structural and environmental performance of lightweight membrane structures combining the use of the main three-dimensional architectural and structural software packages with a laboratory activity based on mechanical tests and prototypes. His recent publications in this field investigated the current biaxial testing apparatuses and their use in the mechanical characterisation of coated woven fabrics and ETFE foils for membrane structures. In addition, his current research includes the integration of membranes and GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymers) flexible structural elements.

His teaching activity is mainly related to the constructional techniques and their understanding through building workshops and prototypes.

Knowledge Transfer Partnership - KTP010169 (2015-2016) To design, develop and implement a passive heat recovery and storage system for the ETFE foil encapsulated greenhouse façade/roof using phase change material.

Knowledge Transfer Partnership - KTP009912 (2015-2018) To develop novel tensile membrane structures and also adaptable textile-covered building facades integrating tensile photovoltaic membranes for energy harvesting and environmental control to assist Europe's renewable energy generation targets.

Knowledge Transfer Partnership- KTP9213 (2013-2015) To design, develop and implement a modular self-supporting structural-construction system comprised of linked ETFE foil encapsulated panels.

Selected Publications

Paolo Beccarelli is currently convenor of Tectonics 1 (K11TSA) and Environment and Technology 2 (K14ET2). He is contributor of Tectonics 2A (K12TSA), Tectonics 2B (K12TSB), and Diploma Design Thesis/Dissertation (K14DIS).

He is available for students to 'drop in' and discuss any issues related to their pastoral care or tutoring on Wednesdays from 4:30pm - 5:30pm. During this time, he will try to see students on a 'first come first serve' basis.
