Current Research

Dr Ying Zhang is a molecular microbiologist with strong interests in engineering biology. Her training in PhD and first postdoctoral experience focused on protein manipulation, characterisation and engineering with Prof Richard James at the University of Nottingham in the School of Molecular Medical Sciences. After moving to Clostridia Research Group (CRG), now the BBSRC/EPSRC Synthetic Biology Research Centre (SBRC), she has been working with several commercially valuable bacteria, using novel genetic engineering tools to generate novel strains with advanced properties such as enhanced products yield and selectivity. She is an early career researcher in synthetic biology, and her current research focuses on combining protein engineering and metabolic engineering, using biological engineering tools and synthetic biology approaches to design/redesign pathways, biological components and devices for production of both medically and industrially important commodities.
