Title: Improving the Hospital Care of People with Dementia

Date and time: Thursday, 13th October 2016, 11.30am – 12.30pm

Venue: Room A08, Institute of Mental Health, Triumph Road

Abstract:  In 2009, Nottingham University Hospitals in collaboration with the University of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust was awarded a five year NIHR programme grant.  Part of this work was to develop and then evaluate a specialist medical and mental health unit to provide best practice dementia care to cognitively impaired older patients admitted to the hospital as a medical emergency (the TEAM trial).  The results of the trial showed no difference on 3 month patient outcomes compared to standard care wards, but carers of patients on the unit were more satisfied with the care and patients on the unit had a better experience of care.

This seminar will look at how, three years after this research completed, the findings from this research are being used to further improve the hospital care of cognitively impaired older patients.  Discussion will cover how the dynamic and creative process of being involved in research inspired and motivated the ward based clinicians to identify innovative ways to further improve their service for the benefit of patients and how working with academics, further research funding has been generated.
