Title: Over the Hill? What is happening to rural dementia friendly communities in England?

Date and time: Thursday, 10th November 2016, 11.30am – 12.30pm

Venue: Room A06, Institute of Mental Health, Triumph Road

Abstract: Rurality is often overlooked when considering dementia care policies and the development of services. Dementia is a growing issue especially in rural communities where people tend to live longer and with chronic conditions. Substantive care is provided by family and friends. This presentation provides an overview of some of the specific aspects of rurality which can impact upon the expectations and experiences of dementia. It will reflect on the ways in which we may consider living well with dementia as connections with community, place, and life history. Recent changes in statutory service provision can provide a stimulus for the development of dementia friendly communities but these may be challenging to organise and sustain in very rural areas. This session provides food for thought about the assumptions made in relation to the design and delivery of dementia friendly services in terms of living well with dementia in rural England.
