Appropriate and Sustainable Design is a methodology pioneered by Schumacher in the 1970s, which places people at the centre of technological solutions, working in harmony with nature. This philosophy is all the more relevant today when the true impact of our activities on the biosphere are becoming apparent. The approach is often linked to engineering for development, but is just as applicable in more industrialised, urban contexts.
