Description

This session will be led by Julia Feuer-Cotter, a PhD student from the School of Geography. Julia has kindly provided the below readings (available to all those on the mailing list) for us to focus discussions on:

  • Porteous, J.D. (2006) “Smellscape.” In The Smell Culture Reader. Ed. Jim Drobnick. Oxford: Berg. p.89-106.

“Smellscapes” is an introductory text that discusses the use of odour to understand history and place.

  • McLean, K (2012) “Emotion, Location and the Senses: A Virtual Derive Smell Map of Paris” Manuscript. Proceedings of the 8th International Design and Emotion Conference. London.

McLean’s “Emotion, Location and the Senses” is a presentation manuscript which discusses the making, documentation, and results of such a smellscape.

  • Rindisbacker (2006) “The Stench of Power” In The Smell Culture Reader. Ed. Jim Drobnick. Oxford: Berg. p.137-147.

This text focuses on the smellscape of trauma and memory - the stench of Auschwitz.

All postgraduates and staff welcome. Hope to see lots of you there!
