Research

The synthesis, processing, characterisation and modelling of novel advanced molecular materials is increasingly essential for the development of improved processes and devices that solve key challenges in the healthcare, energy, electronic and transport sectors.

Our research

The research at our University in this field focuses on advanced molecular materials, and in particular:

Innovative materials

  • Biomaterials
  • Catalysts
  • Materials for energy
  • Graphene and nanocarbons
  • Polymers and composites
  • Optics and photonics
  • Semiconductors

Materials characterisation

  • Structural characterisation
  • Surface characterisation
  • Mechanical properties
  • Physiochemical properties

Molecular materials modelling

  • Materials behaviour modelling
  • Materials processing modelling

Our impact

This research priority area (RPA) supports a wide range of research programmes across many disciplines, with a strong focus on national and international impact. In particular, it is motivated by the need for new and innovate manufacturing to solve some of the persistent problems with properly exploiting these types of materials in industrial, research and clinical settings.

Our University

Advanced Molecular Materials research is thriving at The University of Nottingham, with many world-leading research groups working in this area in the Schools of Chemistry, Physics & Astronomy, Pharmacy, Biosciences and several research groups and centres in the Faculty of Engineering. With such a strong research presence in this field already, The University of Nottingham is the perfect place to expand the work done in this RPA. With first-class equipment and research facilities, world-leading researcher teams and close ties to industry, the NHS and other academic communities, we’re poised to transform our research output in this area.
