Our research focus is on modelling the failure of engineering systems in order to:
- minimise the risks experienced due the failure of safety critical systems
- minimise the whole life costs of providing a safe and reliable service in infrastructure intensive industries
Current research which exploits risk based approaches in order to prevent hazardous system failures is being evolved to take a resilience engineering emphasis.
In this, the types of disruptive events considered are broadened from system failures to include natural disasters and terrorist activity.
In addition the defences against their consequences are extended to include the management of the disruptive event and the rapid restoration of the system functionality.
