History of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine
Cardiovascular Medicine is a Division of the School of Clinical Sciences within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.
-
The Division started life back in 1968 as the Department of Medicine within the newly created Faculty of Medicine.
-
Professor Tony Mitchell was the Foundation Professor of Medicine at the University of Nottingham and it was Tony who shaped the early Department and established the ethos.
-
Over time the Department evolved to become the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine of initially the School of Medical and Surgical Sciences and now the School of Clinical Sciences within the expanded Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.
Cardiovascular Medicine is at the interface between the University and the National Health Service.
-
The members of the original Department of Medicine were expected to teach medical students, to perform research and to use the results of research both to inform teaching and to improve clinical service.
-
The clinical academic staff were directly involved in service delivery and worked closely with NHS colleagues in all respects. In turn, NHS colleagues engaged in teaching and research.
-
This ethos was maintained by subsequent Heads of Department, Professor John Hampton followed by Professor Bob Wilcox and Professor Stan Heptinstal, all of whom followed the Mitchell tradition.
-
The current Head of Group is Dr Sue Fox, a non-clinical scientist who also seeks to maintain the same tradition of close working with NHS colleagues, but with an additional focus on translational research and technology transfer as a means of providing better healthcare for patients with cardiovascular disease.
