NOTTINGHAM PLATELET CONFERENCE

was held on 15th - 16th July 2010 at

East Midlands Conference Centre, University of Nottingham

incorporating the 12th UK Meeting on Platelets and the 12th Erfurt Conference on Platelets

and was entitled

Platelets - Past, Present and Future

  • The organizers were Stan Heptinstall (University of Nottingham, UK), Wolfgang Lösche (University of Jena, Germany) and Peter Spangenberg (Applied University of Jena, Germany).
  • The conference was attended by over 200 delegates from 16 countries.
  • There were 9 invited speakers (which included Professor Gustav Born FRCP, FRS who gave the George Cecil Clark Memorial Lecture) and 117 abstracts were presented as either oral communications (28) or poster communications (89). The abstracts of all presentations will be published in the journal Platelets and a link will be available here very soon.
  • Prizes were awarded to the best presentations given by young people, and these were: 
  • Oral presentations: Zaher Raslan, O11, The role of A-kinase anchoring proteins in mediating the inhibitory effect of protein kinase A in blood platelets (Hull, UK), and Kristina Gegenbauer, O12, Regulator of G-protein signalling - protein 18 is a new substrate of cGMP- and cAMP-dependent protein kinases in platelets (Dublin, Ireland). 
  • Poster presentations: Anne Bertling, P22, Activation of platelets by secreted proteins from Gram positive bacteria (Münster & Giessen, Germany), and Will Kaiser, P19, Heat shock protein 47 appears to behave as a platelet collagen receptor (Reading & Cambridge, UK).
