Research

The Division of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences is well equipped with modern state of the art laboratories and equipment.

Research undertaken in the Division is truly translational due to strong links with industry and the NHS.  We provide opportunities for postgraduate study for students from many clinical and scientific backgrounds and from all over the world.

Our Research

Overview

Our research interests cover ocular surface diseases, immune responses and healing.  We are also interested in ways of repairing damage to the surface of the eye through bological and artificial regeneration. These link to projects looking at the biology of ocular stem cell.

Other research within the Division looks at understanding and treating blinding diseases caused by new blood vessel formation brought on by diabetes or old age (Age-Related Macular Degeneration).

Research Themes

Research in the Division is organised into the following themes:

  • Ocular surface regeneration
  • Ocular stem cell biology
  • Ocular immunology
  • Neovascular eye disease
  • Corneal Nerve Architechture

Postgraduate Study

We have 10 active postgraduates 8 pursuing PhDs and 2 DM degrees, plus 8 writing up. Their interests range from clinical to basic science, within our research themes, see our Student Profiles.

Current self-funded PhD and DM studentship opportunities are available.  Please enquire for further information or apply.
