Dr Frank Newton – one of Nottingham's first MSc Sports Medicine graduates – awarded OBE for his services to Sailing

Dr Frank Newton OBE

Dr Frank Newton OBE

Congratulations to Dr Frank Newton, who has been honoured with an OBE in the 2012 New Year's Honours List. Dr Newton travelled as team doctor with the GB Sailing team to the Olympic Games in 1972 and 1976, and to the Commonwealth Games in 1974 as Doctor for all sports.

Dr Newton is one of the first graduates of the multi-disciplinary Sports and Exercise Medicine course offered by the Centre for Sports Medicine at the School of Clinical Sciences. The MSc programme provides health care professionals with knowledge and skills in the fields of sports medicine, exercise physiology, nutrition and the management of sports injuries and illnesses. Students also learn the science that underpins the practice of sports medicine and exercise physiology.

"The MSc course was an essential supplement to the continuing “hands-on” activities," Dr Newton said. "In short, the Nottingham Sports Medicine course opened doors that would have been closed."
