Ultracentrifugation

The Division of Therapeutics and Molecular Medicine (TMM) is making available its Ultracentrifuge to other departments.

Brief Description

This is a refrigerated high-speed centrifuge (Beckman Avanti J-301) with three rotors suitable for many general centrifugal operations, for example sedimentation of proteins, nucleic acids, subcellular organelles, blood preparations and gradient separations.

Please see below for details on rotors, speeds and G-forces.

The maximum speed (rpm)/relative centrifugal force (G) attained is dependent on the rotor and the tube composition. The details below represent the maximum attainable by each rotor.

Rotor Specifications

JA-30.50 fixed angle rotor (8x50ml) - 30,000rpm/108,860G.

JLA-10.5 rotor (6x500ml) - 10,000rpm/18,500G.

JS-24.15* swing out rotor (6x15ml)- 24,000rpm/103,900G.

JS-24.38* swing out rotor (6x38ml)- 24,000rpm/110,500G.

*Please note that training for use of the swing out rotors will need to be arranged directly with Beckman.

General Information

The user will be liable for any repairs, if these are a direct result of misuse.

Any experiment involving the use of genetically modified organisms must be covered by a current GMAG assessment, a copy of which must be given to Julie Hawley or Caroline Swan.

Only Category 1 GMAG assessed work can be carried out in TMM.
