Study shows persisting socio-economic and gender divide in premature mortality in cystic fibrosis

The link between poor socioeconomic status and premature mortality in people with cystic fibrosis has persisted over the past 50 years, according to a study by Dr Helen Barr, Prof John Britton, Prof Alan Smyth and Dr Andrew Fogarty of The University of Nottingham.

Their research also showed that female patients continue to die at a younger age than men, despite overall improved survival in the 21st century. The paper, entitled "Association between socioeconomic status, sex, and age at death from cystic fibrosis in England and Wales (1959 to 2008): cross sectional studyPDF file icon" was published in the British Medical Journal on 23 August 2011.
