The Moynihan prize won by staff of the University of Nottingham

The Moynihan prize is the most prestigious scientific prize awarded by the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland at their annual international congress. The Congress took place at Liverpool this year. The prize consists of £1,000 together with a medal, and is presented to the author of the best research work delivered at the International Surgical Congress. This year there were over 1000 abstracts submitted of whom 6 were short-listed for the prize by the associations scientific committee.

The winning research paper was entitled "Cellular Mechanisms Underlying the Protective Eeffects of Preoperative Feeding: A Randomized Study Investigating Muscle and Liver Glycogen Content, Mitochondrial Function and Gene Expression" and was authored by the following:
