Biography

My background is predominantly in biochemistry and analytical chemistry. I have spent approximately 15 years in academic research including 2 years in the Department of Biochemistry at Sheffield University working on projects concerned with carbohydrate biochemistry (Prof Mike Fowler) and developmental biochemistry (Prof Ernie Bailey). 7 years with the Cancer Chemotherapy Research Group, Pharmaceutical Sciences Institute, Aston University working for Prof Mike Tisdale on projects in biochemical pharmacology and research into cancer cachexia. It was here that I completed my MPhil. This was followed by 51/2 years as Experimental Officer with the Microbial Biochemistry and Genetics Research Group, Department of Life Sciences, University of Nottingham, working on an industrially funded project under the supervision of Prof John Peberdy. Other experience includes 12 years working in Industry as an analytical chemist, more recently as Laboratory Manager/Quality Manager for the Lipid Technologies Division of Roche Products Ltd.

I have been in my current position as Senior Technician in the Division of Orthopaedic and Accident Surgery since January 2001. My main duties include responsibilty for the management of the laboratories and technical staff within the Division, the purchase of of equipment and consumables, and looking after the Division's finances. I am also Safety Officer for the Division.

I have recently been appointed as a member of the Consultative Committee for Support Staff, representing technical service staff from Medicine, Law and Social Sciences, Arts, Education, Information Services, Registrar's Department and the Chief Financial Officer's Department. My term of office ends 30th September 2013.
