Situation
Romax Technology wished to improve their understanding of noise, vibration and ride harshness present in cars.
Task
To develop new software which could be applied alongside Romax Technology’s existing simulation software.
Action
The KTP developed new simulation code and software based on whole vehicle dynamics, which was added to Romax Technology’s specialisation in transmissions.
Result
The success of the KTP has enabled Romax Technology to increase their own knowledge and to develop ground-breaking new products.
Romax Technology
The partnership that delivered the bigger picture
“Exchanging ideas, information and knowledge is at the heart of all progress and development,” states Nawazish Zaidi, Research Dynamics Engineer at Romax Technology based in Nottingham. “Knowledge Transfer Partnerships recognise this and in encouraging the sharing of expertise can generate incredible results.”
The Knowledge Transfer Partnership between The University of Nottingham and Romax Technology completed in 2006. With an objective to develop vehicle simulation software that will improve the understanding of noise, vibration and harshness properties and the coupled-system dynamics of passenger cars, the project was certainly challenging! But a close partnership and commitment to sharing knowledge and resources have ensured considerable success.
Driving success in a new business area
For the first time, Romax Technology was able to study and gain experience of the dynamics of the whole vehicle and not just transmissions engineering, their specialist area. This involved considerable input from the University academic team focusing on vehicle dynamics, as well as from Nawazish himself.
By integrating chassis dynamics simulation code into Romax simulation software and transferring knowledge to support the development and establishment of the software, Romax can now offer their customers products and services which are truly ground-breaking. It’s an offering that’s based on whole vehicle dynamics and represents an important diversification for the business.
“The new software and consultancy services show amazing results,” says Nawazish, “and the Knowledge Transfer Partnership has also instigated the set up of a Research and Development Group within Romax and further partnerships, placements and graduate recruitment. There’s no stopping us!”
On the team and in the know
Nawazish clearly got a great deal out of his Knowledge Transfer Partnership “I’ve developed both technically and in a managerial sense. And I’ve had some fantastic opportunities which I might otherwise never have come across – such as making presentations at two key industrial conferences and playing a big role in project-based research and development.”
In fact, Nawazish was offered and accepted a permanent position at Romax – a success story in its own right “I’ve even had the chance to supervise an internship for Indian universities involving two students on ten week placements. It’s good to know that other students are benefiting too.”
Romax Technology offers conceptually advanced software and expert consulting services for the global transmission industry. Our clients include the most prominent engineering companies in the automotive, aerospace, marine, industrial equipment, power generation and rail industries.
Romax’s headquarters are in the UK. The company also has a European sales office in Germany, offices in Japan, Australia, Germany, Korea, North America and India and representation in China.
