Forming spin-out companies is one of a number of mechanisms by which universities drive forward the commercialisation of their research outcomes. Spin-outs provide a means of further developing products and engaging with the market place through a dedicated vehicle. For specific technologies, far greater returns can be achieved by this route than would have been possible through direct licensing.
The University has a current portfolio of over 28 spin-outs, 14 of which have products or services in the market place.
We have also formed a strategic alliance with Fusion IP plc. Fusion provides access to early stage investment as well as management expertise.
We now have the opportunity to develop the first in a new class of drugs to address a real unmet medical need which is very exciting.
