The discovery and development of new potential medicines is an area where combining eastern and western expertise could bring huge advantages. This conference promises to provide an opportunity to discuss critical issues and create new partnerships between British and Chinese researchers and pharmaceutical businesses.

The event will be hosted by The University of Nottingham’s School of Pharmacy and the Centre for Biomolecular Sciences in partnership with Shanghai Institute Materia Medica (SIMM), part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). It will take place in London ZEDpavilion’s Auditorium at Shanghai Expo 2010.

The University of Nottingham’s Expo Lead, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Chris Rudd, said: “So far as we’ve seen we’re the only Western University with a major presence at Expo — the whole experience has been a fantastic eye-opener for both sides, with 6,000 visitors seeing our materials each day.

“The Drug Discovery event has huge importance because of the compelling need to provide China’s 1.3 billion citizens with access to affordable healthcare — but it also celebrates our strategic partnership with CAS — China’s prestigious national institution.”

Talks at the conference, Drug Discovery and Development Partnering, will showcase expertise and advanced technology in drug R&D, and offer panel discussions featuring domestic and international drug R&D leaders and governmental agencies. The number of participants is limited to 70 to enable in-depth discussions.

Professor Kevin Shakesheff, Head of Nottingham’s School of Pharmacy, said: “The School of Pharmacy is excited by these opportunities to collaborate with leading scientists at SIMM and from across the pharmaceutical industry to accelerate the discovery of new drugs.

“We hope to play a key role in the training of new generations of scientists in China who understand the pharmaceutical development process from the first step of drug discovery through to product launch.”

Through several generations of effort, SIMM has become one of the leading interdisciplinary research centers in China. It is recognised worldwide by its outstanding achievements in both basic and applied research fields across drug discovery and development.

Professor Hualiang Jiang, Deputy Director of Shanghai Institute Materia Medica (SIMM), said: “The co-organisation of this Conference is a milestone for the collaboration between Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SIMM) and The University of Nottingham. This collaboration brings together expertise from both sides to stimulate the capabilities in drug discovery and to promote pharmaceutical education.

“It is expected that the synergy from this partnership will result in not only breakthroughs in drug research, but also the enhancement of international communications and the advancement of the Chinese pharmaceutical industry.”

Professor Hualiang Jiang will present a session on Drug Design: Method and Software Development, while his colleague, Professor Weiliang Zhu, Director of SIMM’s Drug Discovery and Design Center, will present on Drug Discovery Based on Protein Structure and Function.

Dr Mingqiang Zhang, Chief Technology Officer at Roche R&D Centre China Ltd; Dr Qunsheng Ji, Translational Science Director, AstraZeneca Innovation Center China; and Dr Hongwu Zhang, Board Member and Senior Vice President, CTO of Shiyao Pharmaceutical Co. Group, China will provide pharmaceutical industry perspectives.

An award-winning entrepreneurial researcher, Professor Kevin Shakesheff has successfully spun out two companies based on his research, Critical Pharmaceuticals Ltd (winner of the 2002 Research Councils Business Plan Competition) and RegenTec Ltd. His insights will inform a conference programme examining diverse case studies of rational drug discovery and debating pre-clinic and clinic evaluations.

Other leading researchers from Nottingham presenting at the Conference, include: Professor Peter M Fischer, Director of the Centre for Biomolecular Sciences; Professor Neil R Thomas, Professor of Medicinal and Biological Chemistry in the Faculty of Science; and Professor Stephen Doughty, Professor of Pharmacy and Director of Studies at the University’s Malaysia Campus.
