Half the world’s human beings now live in urban rather than rural areas. Last year, the balance shifted from the countryside to towns and cities for the first time — and this trend is predicted to continue as the global population grows from 6.8 billion to more than 9 billion by 2050.
Expo 2010’s overarching theme ‘Better City, Better Life’ will be examined by speakers and delegates at this two-day expert-led symposium, Eco-Urbanism: Towards Sustainable City Living. The event is hosted by The University of Nottingham’s Department of Architecture & Built Environment in partnership with the five major schools of architecture and planning in China: Tsinghua, Tianjin, Tongji, South East and Nanjing.
On the first day, leading researchers will debate international best practice in eco-city planning and design, and on the second day a workshop involving academics and leading representatives from municipal authorities in Shanghai will look to develop innovative ideas for real projects in the city.
With a population fast approaching 20 million residents (and predicted by the Shanghai Population and Family Planning Commission to rise to over 22 million by 2020), Shanghai’s planners and officials already need to tackle these challenges.
Event organiser Professor Tim Heath, Chair of Architecture & Urban Design and Head of the Department of Architecture & Built Environment at The University of Nottingham, said: “Sustainable development is at the forefront of the world’s thoughts and this symposium will focus upon new design-led approach to solving the challenges of urban environments.
“The symposium will draw together leading academics from China and the UK to explore and articulate a recently emerging and sustainably sensitive approach to urban development known as ‘ecological urbanism’. At a time when parts of the World — especially China — are experiencing many challenges including rapid urbanization, urban sprawl, increasing urban populations and climate change, ‘eco-urbanism’ could provide an invaluable new approach to the design of more sustainable cities.”
The sessions will consider ways of building communities and sustaining healthy lifestyles; balancing planned development with protecting the environment, conserving resources and reducing CO2 emissions.
Professor Chris Rudd, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Knowledge Transfer and Business Engagement, who leads The University of Nottingham’s presence at Shanghai Expo, said: “Expo 2010 provides a compelling platform to showcase our portfolio of work in sustainability and conveys our message to a genuinely global audience.
“The sheer buzz around the Expo site — the massive footfall and the overwhelming engagement with design gives a real sense of dynamism and appetite for change. Even a stroll across the Expo park provides a masterclass in low carbon design and planning. We look forward to putting those messages into a world context, helped by some of the most creative minds in architecture today.”

All events take place in The Auditorium at London ZEDpavilion, part of the Zero Carbon Living Space zone at Shanghai Expo 2010. The building is an example of urban best practice, designed and built by leading green architects ZEDfactory. It was chosen after winning the international design competition in this category.
The University of Nottingham’s exhibition and series of expert-led events is running from May until the end of October in the London ZEDpavilion.
Throughout the next three months, top researchers from the University’s campuses in the UK, China and Malaysia, as well as leading colleagues from other institutions, will host eight more thought-provoking workshops, lectures and conferences in total. The University of Nottingham’s world changing research based on the theme ‘Zero Carbon, Zero Waste’ is on display at the Shanghai World Exposition 2010 until October 31. Millions of visitors are expected to visit the Expo and many will have an opportunity to explore — through words, pictures and video — The University of Nottingham’s leading research in sustainability as part of a collaborative exhibition with ZEDfactory.
The University is also partnering with the East Midlands Development Agency (emda) helping to attract Chinese investment to the East Midlands through the work of emda’s East Midlands China Business Bureau. Last month, emda announced that the Chinese car manufacturer, Chang’an Automobile Co, will establish its UK Research and Development facility at No 1 Nottingham Science Park, creating up to 200 new jobs.

2010上海世博会期间将展出诺丁汉大学以“零碳、零废物”为主题的，能够改变世界的研究成果，展览将持续到10月31日。数以万计的游客将去上海世博会参观并且许多人将有机会通过文字、图片、视频探索诺丁汉大学领先的可持续性研究，这些研究也是与英国零能耗工厂协作展览的组成部分。
