The University is working with partners ZEDfactory — leading green architects and innovators in zero-carbon design and development — to showcase its research in the ZEDpavilion.
For 184 days, from May 1 to October 31, some 70 million visitors are expected to visit the Expo and many will have an opportunity to explore — through words, pictures and video — The University of Nottingham’s leading research in sustainability as part of a collaborative exhibition with ZEDfactory.
Professor Chris Rudd, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Knowledge Transfer, said: “As a global university with campuses in the UK, China and Malaysia, The University of Nottingham is thrilled to be a part of Shanghai Expo 2010 to showcase our world-changing research in sustainability.”
Since the first World Fair, held at Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, London, in 1851, the national pavilions created by participating countries have been the main feature of these international events. The pavilion, located in the Urban Best Practice Zone at Shanghai Expo 2010, will be one of the many purpose-built pavilions featuring exhibitions by some 200 nations and organisations.
Bill Dunster, Managing Director, ZEDfactory, said: “Having worked with The University of Nottingham creating the low carbon but idyllic Jubilee Campus since 1996, perfecting solar cooling and dehumidification in the Department of the Built Environment and designing the Codes 4 and 6 Tarmac houses in the campus low carbon village, there is no doubt about the University’s commitment to a practical zero carbon waste future.
ZEDfactory have built these years of collaboration into the Urban Best Practice demonstration legacy project at the 2010 Shanghai Expo, demonstrating that — with the best international partners — China can deliver some of the most innovative zero carbon urbanism in the world.”
Throughout the duration of Shanghai Expo the University will be holding a series of thought-provoking conferences, workshops and lectures in the pavilion on topics such as global food security, homes without carbon, eco-city planning and green business.
The University is also working in partnership with East Midlands Development Agency (emda). emda is helping to attract Chinese investment into the East Midlands through the work of the East Midlands China Business Bureau.
David Wallace, International and Innovation Director at emda, said: “China is the fastest growing of the world’s large economies. The opportunities, both in terms of investment from Chinese businesses and for trade with the country are enormous.
“The East Midlands, with its central location and world-class research, teaching and knowledge transfer environment is ideally placed to support highly productive and innovative businesses that use new technologies and processes.
We have already seen a number of Asia-Pacific businesses choosing to invest here. At the Shanghai World Expo, The University of Nottingham and other partners will help to make Chinese businesses aware of the excellent work that takes place in the East Midlands and the benefits of investing in our region.”
