Industrial activity on this scale requires vast quantities of energy and raw materials — China’s demand for oil rose 28 per cent in January and its consumption of iron ore has driven commodity prices ever higher.
China’s Government knows that to maintain steady economic growth and prosperity, protect the country’s own climate and natural resources, and attain greater operating efficiency its industries must become more environmentally sustainable. A University of Nottingham workshop on Green Manufacturing at Shanghai Expo this week promises to provide insights into how this can be achieved through knowledge partnerships.
On Thursday June 24, in The Auditorium at the London ZEDpavilion at Shanghai Expo, sustainable manufacturing researchers from The University of Nottingham will join Chinese experts to launch the Sino-UK Low Carbon Manufacturing Consortium and focus on latest developments in green manufacturing.
Project sponsor Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Chris Rudd said: “Given our pioneering work on sustainability at the Nottingham’s Ningbo Campus, and the huge portfolio of China-facing research at Nottingham, it was unthinkable that we would miss the opportunity to be at Expo 2010.
“We believe we’re the only Western university to have taken this bold step. We’re reaching a lot of people at almost every level and the Green Manufacturing workshop is just one further example of our commitment to making a difference.”
Professor Nabil Gindy, Vice-Provost and Dean of the Graduate School at The University of Nottingham Ningbo, China, and International Director of Nottingham Innovative Manufacturing Research Centre (NIMRC), said: “The Sino-UK Low Carbon Manufacturing Consortium represents a unique multi-disciplinary research and educational partnership between an internationally renowned academic steering group and industry and government bodies in the UK and China.”
Mr Zheng Yu, Director of Ningbo Science and Technology Bureau, and Dr Richard Mills, Consul for Science & Innovation at the British Consulate General in Shanghai, will join Professor Gindy and guests to launch the Sino-UK LCMC at Thursday’s morning of briefings. Experts will represent China’s National Key Laboratory for Remanufacturing, as well as Tsinghua University, Chongqing University, Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiaotong University and The University of Nottingham Ningbo Campus.
Explaining more about the Consortium, Prof Gindy said: “Sino-UK LCMC is a platform for promoting, developing and facilitating sustainable manufacturing and eco-innovation amongst enterprises and within the research community. Membership of the consortium is free and is open to all individuals, companies, academia and government agencies with interests in sustainable manufacturing issues.
This is the third in a series of University of Nottingham events at Shanghai Expo 2010.
