This Sunday, 17 October, leading researchers from Nottingham, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the BFI will explore Moving Images and the Digital Eco-City, focusing on the roles of technology, information and entertainment.

Innovation of urban technology is one key principle underpinning Shanghai Expo’s representation of the basic framework of the ‘Eco-City’ – and digital media has a part to play. The event will also be a showcase for rare archive treasures: footage from China in 1901 and London in 1910.

A pioneering arts and humanities event, the conference will revolve around the challenges associated with three themes:

  • What is the ecological value of digital images as a supposedly ‘clean’ and sustainable media?
  • How can digital images be used to improve the quality of city life? and
  • What is the place of technology and entertainment in the future of the Eco-‘Infoport’?

Commenting on the event Dr Julian Stringer, Associate Professor in Film and Television Studies at The University of Nottingham said: “Since the late 19th century, urban living and forms of media have increasingly converged to a point where, today, we can talk about a media city.

“A number of historical developments, including electricity, cinema, radio, television, and the internet, have created a succession of new relations between architecture and media. The event will consider how these media forms shape urban living, particularly at a moment when digital media are becoming ever more mobile. And it is appropriate that we will be considering these issues in Shanghai. After all, the Expo as a vision of the eco future is itself presented via use of digital screens and advanced moving image technologies.”

Nottingham’s Shanghai World Expo lead, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Chris Rudd, said: “This conference demonstrates how our University-wide engagement with issues of global sustainability bridges the arts and sciences. This event will draw in visitors with an appetite for unique, challenging perspectives. The University of Nottingham’s expertise is well represented in this latest rich and thought-provoking programme.”

The conference will also act as a platform for the BFI to show some of its rare video archive. Robin Baker, Head Curator of the BFI, will unveil unique film of Shanghai during the city’s formative stages as a burgeoning international trade hub in the early 20th century.

“The BFI National Archive looks after one of the world’s largest and most diverse collections of film and TV. This programme of films from the archive shows life in Shanghai in the first half of the 20th century.

“From footage of Shanghai’s cosmopolitan community on Nanjing Road in 1901, to the home movies of amateur filmmakers living in the International Settlement in the 1930s, the programme will present a vivid portrait of the metropolis seen through European eyes.”

Also being screened will be vintage film of Piccadilly Circus in 1910. Writing about the screening Rhidian Davis, Education Curator of the BFI, said: “It is exactly a century since Piccadilly Circus, London, became the first place in the world to display outdoor illuminated electric advertisements.

“This presentation, which includes a screening of early archive material of London from the BFI collection, explores Piccadilly Circus as an influential site in the evolution of the synthetic cityscape.”

In addition, delegates will have the opportunity to watch a rare film of Nottingham, Old Market Square, produced in 1951 as part of the city’s Festival of Britain celebrations and provided courtesy of the Media Archive for Central England.

All of the screenings are to be viewed in light of the question of how ‘old’ footage may be re-inserted into modern cities in ways which help enhance the quality of life for inhabitants. It’s an increasingly relevant theme in an increasingly digitised society.

Other keynote speakers include: Professor William Uricchio, Director of the Comparative Media Studies Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Professor Roberta Pearson, Head of Department of Culture, Film and Media; Dr Gianluca Sergi, Associate Professor in Film and Television Studies; Dr Daria Berg, Associate Professor in Chinese Studies; and Dr Luke Robinson and Dr Mark Gallagher, Lecturers in Film and Television Studies at The University of Nottingham.

The event on Sunday 17th October 2010 runs from 18:00–22:00pm. More information can be found here: http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/shanghaiexpo2010/Events/BookingForm/movingimagedigitalec.aspx

All events take place in The Auditorium at London ZEDpavilion. The building is an example of urban best practice, designed and built by leading green architects ZEDfactory. It was chosen after winning the international design competition in this category.

Throughout October, the final month of Shanghai Expo 2010, top researchers from the University’s campuses in the UK and Asia, as well as leading colleagues from other institutions, will host just three more thought-provoking workshops, lectures and conferences. These span Nottingham’s extensive research in sustainability:

  • Sunday October 17 Moving Images and the Digital Eco-City
  • Wednesday October 20 Alternative Energy: Hydrogen Storage
  • Sunday October 24 Sustainable Agriculture: The Role of Plant Reproduction

The University of Nottingham’s world changing research based on the theme ‘Zero Carbon, Zero Waste’ is on display at the Shanghai World Exposition 2010 until October 31. Millions of visitors are expected to visit the Expo and many will have an opportunity to explore — through words, pictures and video — The University of Nottingham’s leading research in sustainability as part of a collaborative exhibition with ZEDfactory.

The University is also partnering with the East Midlands Development Agency (emda) helping to attract Chinese investment to the East Midlands through the work of emda’s East Midlands China Business Bureau. Last month, emda announced that the Chinese car manufacturer, Chang’an Automobile Co, will establish its UK Research and Development facility at No 1 Nottingham Science Park, creating up to 200 new jobs.

The University of Nottingham’s dynamic internationalisation strategy attracts talented staff and students from 150 nations, undertakes world-changing research, and invests in award-winning campuses in the United Kingdom, China and Malaysia.

As the first overseas academic institution granted permission to set up inside the People’s Republic, Nottingham has taken a pioneering role in China. Since 2004, The University of Nottingham Ningbo, China, has grown to more than 4,000 students and has received numerous awards and accolades. It was also declared Outward Investor of the Year by the foremost China-Britain trade association, the 48 Group Club.

— Ends —

Notes to editors: The University of Nottingham, described by The Times as “the nearest Britain has to a truly global university”, has award-winning campuses in the United Kingdom, China and Malaysia. It is ranked in the UK’s Top 10 and the World’s Top 75 universities by the Shanghai Jiao Tong (SJTU) and the QS World University Rankings.

The University is committed to providing a truly international education for its 39,000 students, producing world-leading research and benefiting the communities around its campuses in the UK and Asia.

More than 90 per cent of research at The University of Nottingham is of international quality, according to the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (2008), with almost 60 per cent of all research defined as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’. Research Fortnight analysis of RAE 2008 ranked the University 7th in the UK by research power.

The University’s vision is to be recognised around the world for its signature contributions, especially in global food security, energy & sustainability, and health.
