The Year Abroad is for many students the most exciting and rewarding time of their studies. Students not only improve their Russian language skills, but also gain an understanding of authentic Russian life and culture. They get to know Russia with all its exciting opportunities and differences and return to Britain with new insights and valuable experiences.
In addition, all students studying Russian spend two weeks after their first year on a language course in St Petersburg. This opportunity to gain a first impression of Russia prepares our students for the Year Abroad in the third year. Students studying Serbian/Croatian with us spend two weeks in Belgrade during the Easter vacation of their first year.
Single Honours students spend the whole third year of their course in Russia or in Serbia. You can stay in one place for the whole year or decide to split your time between two Russian or two Serbian cities.
You can make your choice where to stay in Russia from a wide range of places, from elegant Petersburg and cosmopolitan Moscow to less European cities in Siberia, quieter towns in the beautiful far North or bustling cities in the South. In Serbia, you will usually be placed in Belgrade.
While abroad you can either live in a student dormitory or with a family in private accommodation. If you choose a home stay, our Year Abroad Officer will help you with the necessary arrangements.
Joint Honours students have the option to split their year between two countries abroad.
Students can choose from a wide range of study programmes at different universities and institutes in Russia, including:
Much of your time abroad will be spent learning the language, but many students also take the opportunity to gain work experience in part-time jobs, volunteer work and in work placements. We also have links with a number of companies and organizations and our Year Abroad Officer can assist in finding the right place for you.
The Year Abroad is organized by our Year Abroad Officer and an non-profit-making organization, RLUS (Russian Language Undergraduate Studies).
Before you leave for Russia or Serbia, there will be several meetings, including a safety briefing which will provide practical information and prepare you for your time abroad.
All students need to have health insurance for their Year Abroad. We provide insurance unless students wish to make their own arrangements.
There are on-site RLUS officers in all big Russian cities and our Year Abroad Officer is always contactable in cases of emergency.
