    Welcome

The School of Medical and Surgical Sciences was formed in 1997 through the merger of 15 medical and surgical departments which are involved in basic, translational and clinical research. The School is based on two main sites (Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham; Nottingham City Hospital) and has over 250 staff with extensive research experience both at a national and international level. The School has over 170 Postgraduate Research students and annual income raised from Research Councils, Industry and Charity exceeds £6.5 million.

The research interests of the School are diverse and include Allergic and Inflammatory Disease, Vascular Disease, Surgery, Neurology, Anaesthesia and Dermatology. Our research is delivered largely through Divisions, research groups, centres and Institutes and includes laboratory based research (for example cell biology, molecular pharmacology and cell signalling), human clinical research (for example Stroke, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Thrombosis and Haemostasis, Cancer and Therapeutics) and Epidemiological Studies. The diversity of the Schools interests, together with the collaborative nature of our research, ensures a large critical mass, extensive specialist research facilities and excellent technical expertise provided by skilled laboratory technicians and up to date information technology.

Students undertaking postgraduate research programmes within the school are expected to complete a structured training course in the first year of study. This course has been developed specifically to meet the needs of students studying within our Faculty. Progression through the period of study is closely monitored through regular meetings with the students’ supervisor and by reviews with an internal assessor in years 1 and 2. Weekly seminars take place with internal and external speakers at which Postgraduates are expected to attend and periodically present.
