Centre for Social Work
'Social work has been taught at the University of Nottingham since the 1950s.'
The Centre for Social Work collaborates closely with a wide range of statutory, voluntary and independent sector social care providers across the East Midlands in the delivery of its academic and practice teaching.
We currently offer a range of social work programmes, both for individuals wishing to qualify as social work practitioners and for qualified social workers who are seeking to expand their professional expertise.
"The social work profession promotes social change, problem-solving in human relationships and the empowerment and liberation of people to enhance well-being. Utilising theories of human behaviour and social systems, social work intervenes at the points where people interact with their environments. Principles of human rights and social justice are fundamental to social work."
The Centre for Social Work aspires to reflect this philosophy in its teaching and research.
The Centre for Social Work offers the opportunity to study for various professional and academic qualifications. We welcome students from all backgrounds, including mature students; students with disabilities and international students.
We have over thirty years experience of training social workers, and our students are very well regarded by employers in the region and nationally. If you come to Nottingham, you will be part of a lively School, committed to providing a learning environment which encourages high academic standards in a lively and stimulating atmosphere. You will be given an excellent grounding in social policy and research methods and will be taught by people who are committed to the values and ethical standards of the best social work practice, and who have wide ranging expertise in:

User and carer involvement

The School also has particular strengths in Social Policy teaching and research. It has one of the longest established undergraduate and Master’s degree programmes in Social Policy (over 40 years) and has a dedicated research centre (The International Centre for Public and Social Policy) which conducts studies of direct relevance to social work policy and practice, including studies of adults and young carers, poverty and social exclusion, disability and mental health, etc. Students on the BA Social Work and Social Policy have an unrivalled opportunity to learn about and engage with key issues of social policy (including how policies are made and implemented) and their relationship with social work, service users and carers, and outcomes for social work. Social work practitioners benefit greatly from a sound knowledge and thorough understanding of how social policy impacts on the social issues and social problems which confront many of our service users and their families. Studying at Nottingham will provide you with this important knowledge and research base.
