My research project aims to examine women's work in the Iranian broadcasting organization (IRIB). The intention is to document women's experiences of working in IRIB after the Islamic revolution in 1979. Exploring women's contributions and challenges of working in the broadcast sector is at the core of this research.
Before the revolution Muslim families had a negative view towards film and television industries due to their 'western' and 'secular' work-place culture and their 'un-Islamic' content. Since the Islamic revolution it was assumed that these media had, like other aspects of the society, been 'Islamised'. many Muslim women began working in television and radio. Today after three decades of the revolution, along with many other changes in the cultural and social situation, women's participation in the broadcast media has significantly changed. The number of female managers, producers and directors has also increased considerably. However, there are not many studies which have focused on the experiences and contributions of Iranian women in broadcast media.
This research uses qualitative methods (interview) in order to expand this field of enquiry and investigate women's work in the IRIB from the view point of women who work there. The study will explore:
