About the Department
We are one of the largest departments of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies in the country. We were top-ranked for research in the last Research Assessment Exercise, 2008, while our teaching was graded excellent in 2004 by HEFCE.
We have 12 full-time academic staff, including 5 professors, 3 language co-ordinators and 3 research fellows. We also have a large team of postgraduate and part-time language teachers, from Spain, Portugal, Brazil and Spanish America, including a visiting language lecturer from Cuba.
We teach Spanish and Portuguese language from beginners’ level. We teach courses on the history, culture, literature and cinema of Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Spanish America and Lusophone Africa, from the Iberian empires of the sixteenth century - when Spain and Portugal began to explore the world outside Europe - to the many and populous Spanish and Portuguese-speaking nations on the face of the Earth today.
