The Year Abroad

The Year Abroad is certainly the most exciting element of your degree programme in Hispanic or Lusophone studies.

Single-Language Study

If you are studying one of our languages to final year level then you will spend a full academic year in either a Spanish or a Portuguese-speaking environment.

Two-Language Study

If your are studying both of our languages to final year level, then you will spend one semester in a Spanish-speaking country and one in a Portuguese-speaking country.

Three-Language Study

Some of our students find themselves studying three languages to final year level. In those cases, the third semester for the third language is made up of Summer courses. This happens if you study a three language degree such as the BA in Modern Language Studies or if you take another language as a Joint Honours subject with Hispanic Studies and carry on with Portuguese in your final year.

Year Abroad Options

There are three ways of doing the Year Abroad. You can

  • study at university
  • work as a Language Teaching Assistant
  • do a work placement

The most important thing is that you have an extended period of time to live in the culture, speak the language every day to your friends and colleagues and have some experience of working and/or studying in the language. You will find that your language skills improve dramatically and that you will also become more confident in yourself in general as well as learning a tremendous amount about the culture in which you are living.
