Guaranteed Bursaries 2012-13

The University of Nottingham is providing a generous package of bursaries to support home* students from lower-income families who are liable for the £9,000 tuition fee. Unfortunately, students on NHS-funded courses are not eligible for these University bursaries.

University Core Bursary

At least a third of our students are likely to be eligible for our Core Bursary, which offers up to £3,000 for each year of undergraduate study.

Please see thresholds and award levels below, if you have any questions about your entitlement please email us at Bursaries@nottingham.ac.uk

Bursaries of between £750 - £3,000 are being offered to undergraduate students who commenced their course in September 2012 and are liable for the £9,000 tuition fee.

To be eligible you must:

  • Be registered on a first undergraduate degree course at Nottingham.
  • Have UK home status for funding purposes.
  • Be liable for the tuition fee of £9,000 in 2012-13.
  • Have had a full financial assessment carried out by Student Finance.
  • Have a residual household income between £0-£42,600 as assessed by Student Finance.

Students in receipt of a National Scholarships Programme award (with the exception of care leavers) will not receive a Core Bursary in their entry year but will still be able (if eligible) to receive a Nottingham Potential Bursary; if eligible Core Bursaries will be paid in future years.

Core Bursary Awards
Residual household income Amount of bursary
up to £15,000 £3,000
£15,001 - £25,000 £2,000
£25,001 - £35,000 £1,000
£35,001 - £42,600 £750

Nottingham Potential Bursary

A Nottingham Potential Bursary provides an additional £1,000 a year for students who meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Entering via an Access route or with vocational qualifications and with a residual household income figure of up to £42,600. To be eligible on this basis you must be in your year of entry to the University, and on the first year of your course (or year 0 if doing a foundation year).
  • Students with a residual household income figure of up to £42,600 with financially dependent children or adults.
  • Students under the age of 25 years at the start of the course who are currently or have been in public care for a minimum time period of three months.
  • Students who have fulfilled specified conditions through participation in the University's widening participation outreach activities (for example, through our summer schools)

National Scholarship Programme

The University aims to participate in the National Scholarship Programme (NSP) by providing full fee waivers for two groups of students in their entry year:

  • Those enrolled on one of the University’s year 0 courses** with a household income of up to £25,000
  • Care Leavers with a household income of up to £25,000 (that is, students under the age of 25 years at the start of their course who are currently or have been in public care for a minimum time period of three months). Care leavers will also receive a partial fee waiver of £3,000, maintained by the University, in each subsequent year of study.

We will also provide National Scholarship Programme awards to students whose home address is in the East Midlands (with a household income of up to £25,000). These will take the form of:

  • a partial fee waiver of £3,000
  • a cash bursary of £1,000
  • an accommodation discount (or discount on other services) of £500.

Students in receipt of an NSP (with the exception of care leavers) will not receive a Core Bursary in their entry year but will still be able (if eligible) to receive a Nottingham Potential Bursary. Core Bursaries will be paid in future years to eligible students.

To be eligible for an NSP award you must be ordinarily resident in England, studying a full time course, and liable for the £9,000 tuition fee. NSP awards will be allocated automatically to eligible students.

If you think you are eligible for a NSP award you should ensure you apply for means tested Student Loans Company funding, as the household income figure used will be that calculated by Student Finance. You should also apply for the maximum available Fee Loan during the initial Student Finance application stage (unless you intend to partially self-fund your fee payment), as any fee waiver will be implemented later.

Students with European Union fee status may also be eligible for the fee waiver element of the NSP, as long as they meet the other criteria outlined above.

*Your student finance company (i.e. Student Finance England, Wales, Northern Ireland or SAAS) will decide your residency status. To be classed as a ‘Home’ student you must have been ordinarily resident in the UK for the three year period prior to the start of your course. Students granted refugee status and European migrant workers may also be eligible. If you are unsure of your status contact the student finance company for further information.

**These Year 0 courses facilitate progression to Engineering, Healthcare Science, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and most courses in the Faculty of Science.
