Research environment

Learning in a research-intensive university like The University of Nottingham means you’ll be taught by some of the world’s leading experts in their field.

In the most recent national Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), more than 90 per cent of research at Nottingham was rated as being of international quality. This:

  • reflects the research activity of a high proportion of our staff
  • demonstrates the depth of expertise involved in teaching the students enrolled on our courses
  • confirms our status as a world-class institution

Research into teaching

As a renowned centre for the study of teaching in higher education, world-class research into teaching and learning in universities informs our own practices.

All those who teach at Nottingham are encouraged and supported in continually developing their own teaching practice. As teaching staff adapt new approaches to best support their students they consider:

  • research findings and student feedback
  • successful practices from across the University

Virtual worlds

Second Life

The University has established a web based campus in Second Life where staff from some disciplines have created 3D worlds for students to study in virtual environments. This is particularly valuable where it is less easy to study in the real-world setting, perhaps for practical or ethical reasons.

Mobile technologies

There are also new developments in using mobile phones and GPS devices to connect learning material to where you are on campus.

These examples reflect how our staff apply their research skills to think about new ways of using technology to support and enhance your learning.
