Pride in our heritage

Without the foresight and philanthropic contribution of our greatest benefactor, Sir Jesse Boot, The University of Nottingham, as we know it today, wouldn't exist.

Pride in our heritage

In 1928 Sir Jesse Boot relocated the University from the restricted site in the city centre where it had been since 1881, to a beautifully landscaped park in the suburbs, thanks to his generous gift of 35 acres of land at Highfields, he:

  • created the University’s signature Trent Building
  • set out a challenge for the City and the University
  • visualised an elite seat of learning and widening of participation

Learning from our past

We can learn a lot from his generosity and aspirations for the future ─ not just because he gave of his own personal means, but also from his grand vision for a provincial city.

The University of Nottingham has come a long way since 1928 and continues to grow and succeed by following Jesse Boot's example. Throughout our history we have benefited considerably from the generosity of donors and volunteers.

Were Jesse Boot with us today, he would share our pride in what has been achieved since 1928. He would also urge us on to realise a new vision: one which recognises we have gone beyond the great civic University he dared wish for; one which impacts on the well-being of our world. We can deliver a new vision and you can help us do so, by investing in our future.
