Open Nottingham

Open Nottingham is the University's initiative to increase use, re-use and publication of Open Educational Resources (OER) by staff and students across the university.

OERs are educational materials that are freely available for use and for modification. They offer a way of sharing knowledge and expertise by making aspects of the University’s approach to teaching available to other academics in the sector, as well as making the content of that teaching available to anyone with an interest in learning.

We also collect and collate information and resources around open data and the use and development within the University of open source software.

Open Nottingham aims to make an impact in four areas:

  1. Social Responsibility
Making resources openly available shares knowledge widely and can increase learning opportunities for those who, for whatever reason, are unable to undertake formal qualifications. Sharing also adds to the availability of re-useable materials for learners and educators all over the world. FOr example, Nottingham collaborates with OER Africa and The UK National Commission for UNESCO (ISWG) to make open resources available for use in African education projects.
  2. The Student Experience
Our students benefit from the increased availability of learning materials to all.
  3. Cost Efficiencies
Open resources can help academics save time and in turn can help our University benefit from cost efficiencies.
  4. Promotional Opportunities
Potential students can sample a range of real University learning resources to find out more about ways in which learning happens here.
