The Department of Theology and Religious Studies is one of six departments in the School of Humanities and has been ranked officially as one of the best research destinations by the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. It has also been recognised as having first class teaching at undergraduate level and gained 23 out of 24 in the most recent Teaching Quality Assessment review. The study of theology and religious studies is concerned with the ideas through which religion is communicated: how they are developed, what they mean, whether they are true, and how they may be reformulated. To study theology demands a wide range of knowledge, considerable insight, and care in interpretation.

The Department provides undergraduate students the opportunity to study the subject in its broadest sense by combining textual, literary and historical approaches to the Jewish and Christian Scriptures, philosophical, sociological and comparative approaches to religious traditions and Christian Theology. The Department also offers an exciting range of taught masters programmes, distance learning courses as well as supervision for research degrees.
