The Language Centre provides classes from beginners (Stage 1) to near native speaker (Stage 6) and offers modules in nine languages, with various entry points depending on previous language learning experience:

  • Arabic - modern standard (Stages 1-3)
  • French (Stages 1-6)
  • German (Stages 1-6)
  • Greek - modern (Stage 1)
  • Italian (Stages 1-3)
  • Japanese (Stages 1-3)
  • Mandarin Chinese (Stages 1-4)
  • Portuguese (Stages 1 - 2)
  • Spanish (Stages 1-6)

Teaching and assessment

Modules are available to undergraduate and postgraduate students from all departments at no additional cost, provided they are taken within the credit allocation.

Modules are taught in small, inter-faculty groups and comprise three hours of classes per week, usually taught in the target language and include at least one hour per week in a digital language classroom, supplemented with independent study.

Assessment consists of coursework and end of semester examinations in speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Learning and support

Study is supported by the University's virtual learning environment (Moodle), which gives students access to online materials such as the One Stop Language Shop.

Our Self Access Centre, a reference resource centre, supports independent language learning with a wide variety of resources including:

  • networked PCs
  • language learning applications
  • satellite TV
  • audio workstations
  • course books
  • grammar and reference books
  • dictionaries
  • magazines
  • CD-Roms.
