Mortimer’s Hole
Castle Rock cave CD1
The power of documentary evidence - Edward III’s men climbing up Mortimer’s Hole in
1330, by T. Allen and R. Sands. Mortimer’s Hole never looked like this!
Scanning at the medieval entrance to Mortimer’s Hole.
Panoramic view from 003 with tunnel to original entrance (004) on left, tunnel to new
entrance (002) in centre, and tunnel (with probable medieval herringbone toolmarking)
down towards gun platform and Brewhouse Yard (006) on right.
On the ‘Gun Platform’, half way down Mortimer’s Hole. In this part of the tunnel the
collapsed roof provided an ideal observation or artillery platform during the Civil War.
