Trent & Peak Archaeology / The University of Nottingham King David’s Dungeon, Castle Rock   King David’s dungeon is once said to have held King David II of Scotland for a period of time when England and Scotland were at war in the early 14th century.  The dungeon is a rock cut rectangular cave, 9x4m, and 4m high.  It is heavily tool marked and has a significant amount of graffiti.  The dungeon forms only one part of the cave system which contains a number of passage ways and other caves including a wine cellar and the area known as ‘Romylowe’s cave’.  A  detailed description of the cave system can be found here  You can visit King David’s Dungeon on a guided tour from the Castle. Find out how to do this on the Access page.
