Hand & Heart   DD6 Description - DD6, Hand & Heart Description 001 long rock-cut room with slightly arched ceiling up to m high, 4m wide x  m long. Alcoves floor to ceiling cut into walls at fairly regular intervals and deep alcove above rock step at south end of room. Opening with modern door on west wall 6m from back of cave to steps 002. Bare rock quite eroded, few visible toolmarks. Quite dry and pleasant but with dehumidifiers working. Two wooden supports presumably covering steels, slot in wall near opening to 003 presumably once held steel. Short shaft / opening in ceiling 001a approximately half way along, opens to courtyard (at top of 002). Shaft c. 0.9m d and 1.2m high but cut and brick-lined to south, with 5 brick steps to courtyard opening, now blocked. 002 21 modern brick steps in rock-cut passage up to courtyard. 002A deep alcove c. 1m wide, 1.2m deep. All toolmarking very rough, looks modern.  003 long level rock-cut room with slightly arched ceiling, parallel to 001. xm long x xm wide. Ceiling at c. 2.7m very pebbly. Partitioned 5m from S end by modern brick wall, producing 003a gents' toilets and 003b rock bar. 003B has central ornate carved wooden pillar, presumably covering steel. Opens out at N end to be xm wide. Mostly quite eroded with little toolmarking visible. Quite a lot of modern graffiti, especially in 003a. 003C square-cut shaft at rear of 003b, 2m high x 0.7x0.7m wide. Looks modern. 003d arched rock-cut opening between 003b and 001, 2m high x 1.4m wide with 2 brick steps down. 004 steps in rock-cut passage. 16 modern steps then landing, 180-degree turn and 4 more steps up to courtyard level. Visible rock to height of c. 4m above ground, then boxed in. 005 modern bar and shop frontage, brick built. 4M deep then cliff-face visible through arch behind bar, blocked in with woodwork (concealing steels?) between 005 and 003. 006 beer cellar, accessed through wooden door at n end of 001. Narrow cellar xm x xm x xm high with arched ceiling, running parallel to 001. Various brick alcoves and shelves in west wall, possibly some once entrances to 001. Cellar very full of barrels and pub paraphenalia. Concrete floor slightly lower than 001, accessed by 4 brick steps. Soakaway cut into floor half way along, 1.2m? deep.
