Shire Hall Caves
Nottingham’s Shire Hall is in the Lace
Market area of Nottingham on High
Pavement, and is now home to the
Galleries of Justice Museum. Details
of opening times and entrance fees for
the museum can be found by visiting
their website here
The Shire Hall as we see it now was
built in 1770. The previous Shire Hall
building had become so dilapitated it
was demolished.
Beneath the Shire Hall lies a system of
caves, partly medieval in date, which
for hundreds of years were used to
house some of Nottingham’s criminals.
