Trent & Peak Archaeology / The University of Nottingham The Sheriff’s Dungeon and the Oubliette. Investiagtions in 2009 rediscovered caves and passages beneath the Medieval cave known as the ‘Sheriff’s Dungeon’.  One of these caves was a bottle shaped pit similar to dungeons known under other Medieval prisons including the old Town Prison (now under Nottingham Contemporary).  Caves of this nature are sometimes known as ‘oubliettes’ from the french ‘oublier’, to forget.  Could the Shire Hall cave alsos have been a dungeon?  Excavation of the fill remaining in the cave may help to answer this question.
