Trent & Peak Archaeology / The University of Nottingham The Salutation Inn   The Salutation is situated on the corner of St Nicholas Street and Hounds Gate in Nottingham city centre.  The present building is thought to have been erected in 1240 on the site of a 13th century ale house called ‘The Archangel Gabriel Salutes the Virgin Mary’.  The name was changed to the ‘Soldier Citizen’ with the arrival of the Puritans some time in the middle of the 17th century.  In 1660 the name was changed back to the ‘Salutation’.  The cave system consists of rock cut passageways, cellars, chambers, a well and chimneys.  Read more about the cave system by clicking here Guided tours of the Salutation caves can be arranged, please contact the venue for further details
