Faced with a problem of too many cars on the road, what are the options available to the government and local authorities to tackle the problem? Listed below are some possible solutions available, although not all of them are applicable in all situations. This list is not exhaustive, nor is it given in any particular order.

• Reduce available roadspace by re-allocating it to other road users (buses, cyclists, pedestrians)
• Increase road space by road-building measures, bypasses, and relief roads

• Provide high-quality public transport alternatives
