Light Rail And Other Mass Rapid Transit Systems
What are the available MRT options?
- Bus enhancements: bus lanes, signal priority, real-time information, new vehicles, bus quality partnerships
- Guided buses: segregated alignment, kerb- or wire-guided. Variable power sources
- Trolleybuses: electric vehicles, can run under own power
- Guided Light Transit: similar to guided bus, but can be rubber-tyred and guided by rail embedded in road. Possibility of automated control?
- People Movers: tracked, small capacity vehicles, e.g. monorails, useful for self-contained sites (eg Disneyland)
- Tram: electric vehicle on rails that can be on or off street running, larger capacity than bus but stopping as frequently
- Metro: Cross between a tram and conventional train. Segregated from other traffic so can be fast, but stops frequently
As you go down the list, the options become more expensive and less flexible, but much more efficient. Imagine taking a tram to the centre of Nottingham from the university campus, rather than a bus. Each town or city will have to decide what is the most appropriate solution based on their physical and social geography and availability of finances.
