A mass rapid transit scheme will have to be part of a wider land use strategy for any town or city. As with any new transport infrastructure scheme, it will have a major impact on the local area, by altering the activity pattern of an area, directing growth and development and regenerating areas suffering from 'urban blight'. One of the most successful projects of recent times has been the regeneration of London's Docklands, and the Docklands Light Railway and London Underground's Jubilee Line Extension have been catalysts in doing so.
